A medical assistant is a trained professional who provides support services in a doctor's office or in a health clinic. Coursework includes instruction in scheduling appointments, coding and processing insurance accounts, billing, collections, and computer operations; assisting with examinations and treatments; performing routine laboratory procedures; electro-cardiography; supervised medication administration; and the legal and ethical issues associated with patient care.

The CMA (AAMA) Certification Exam is a rigorous exam that requires a thorough, broad, and current understanding of health care delivery as evidenced by the Content Outline for the CMA (AAMA)® Certification Exam The exam consists of 200 multiple-choice questions administered in four 40-minute segments.

Many employers prefer to hire medical assistants with this qualification, so it is easier to find a job if you have it. You do need to become recertified every five years, but the added benefits of certification are worth the time and money necessary to get and keep this qualification.

Third semester students should plan to take a medical assisting certification examination. No specific skills or experience are considered prerequisites for entry into the Career Step training program. Medical Assistants can work in a variety of health care settings.
